If you’re visiting Lake Michigan, you need to eat the fish. Bortell’s Fisheries is the best spot for fried, smoked, and fresh fish in the western lakeshore. Located halfway between Pentwater and Ludington on a scenic route, the Bortells is a staple in any lakeshore vacation.

A Legacy of Excellent Fish
The Bortells have been serving up fish to locals and vacationers since 1898. The family used to operate an iconic fishing boat out of Ludington, but when the Michigan Department of Natural Resources ended commercial fishing on Lake Michigan in 1973, they had to start buying fish from Canada and Alaska. They still use the same recipes that have been around for over 100 years though, and customers can’t get enough of their smoked and fried fish.

Why Bortells Fish Is So Good
There’s a rumor that they add bacon grease to the oil, but honestly, I think it just comes down to generations of refinement. Their recipes, processes, and supply chain have been tested over generations, and the result is the best fish you have ever tasted.
Food Options at Bortells Fisheries
Bortells has a slightly overwhelming number of fried fish options as well as clam strips, chicken, and chicken tenders. Everything is sold by the half pound or pound. Sides and drinks are available separately. They also have a selection of smoked and fresh fish. I thought smoked fish sounded weird, but it’s actually really delicious, and their homemade smoked salmon dip is next level.

What to Expect at Bortells Fisheries
Bortells is a family restaurant. Every time you go in, you will see the same 3-4 family members working. The lines are long, and you will likely be waiting outside for a large part of the time you’re waiting. There is no indoor seating though there is a beautiful park across the street that the family actually used to own and donated to the township. They only accept cash, and the prices are a bit expensive. Prices below are a few years old and from the beginning of COVID. We usually budget $20-30 per person to get a good selection of fish options. There are dinner baskets for less, but you’ll probably want some extra fish when you see all the options. And it will be so good, there won’t be leftovers.
